Secret #1

Finishing with Your Weak Hand

Pro Tip: Regardless of what you see in the NBA, you should always finish lay-ups with the left hand on the left side and right had on the right side. Coaches in TRY-OUTS see this as confirmation of proper skill development and will AUTOMATICALLY make you down as higher skilled!!!

COACHES Want PLAYERS THAT
FINISH at the basket with their Weak Hand!

Start now mastering the weak hand lay-up (left if you are right handed), work to make at least 50 lay-ups a day with the weak hand.
Do the following each day you train in order to master weak hand finishes!
  • Make 50 weak hand lay-ups daily
  • Make 25 weak hand Mika Drill shots
  • Weak Hand Dribble Drill 10 mins
Secret #2

Dribble Well with Weak Hand

Pro Tip: Focus your time on ball handling using 2 ball dribbling drills.  You might be tempted train with your weak hand only, however you will become a much better dribbler if you start IMMEDIATELY dribble training with 2 balls.  NBA elites like Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving have perfect their ball handling using these 2 ball techniques!!!

Coaches Will NOT Select Players
Who Cannot Dribble Well with Both Hands

If you want to make a middle or high school team, learn to dribble well with your weak hand.  Coaches ALWAYS notice this! It is a HUGE advantage to their teams.
Do the following each day so you can dribble well with both strong and weak hands!
  • Do at least 15-20 mins of 2-Ball Dribbling (See video)
  • Do all dribble attack moves with both right and left hand dribbles equaly
  • Engage in at least 2-3 pick-up games weekly using weak hand as primary hand for practice
Secret #3

Become a Hustle Player!

Pro Tip: Coaches will choose players on their team in tryout based on their effort and hustle!  Players that work hard to get all loose balls, box out and get rebounds, as well as shut down players on defense ALWAYS make teams.  Defense, rebounding, and getting turnover are the little things that Coach know they need to win games.  Be the player that coaches can rely on for these things, they don’t take skill they only take HEART and EFFORT!!!

EVERY Coach Loves a Player Who Hustles! Hustling takes zero talent, ANYONE can do IT!

To hustle in basketball means to work hard on things other than scoring that coaches need like, rebounding, defending, and diving for loose balls!
Focus on these things in your play games and especially in your team tryouts!
  • Don’t allow players to get around you on defense
  • Box out EVERYTIME a shot goes up on defense
  • Dive on the floor for lose balls
Secret #4

Box Out and Rebound Everytime

Pro Tip: Regardless of athletic ability, any player can make a difference on the boards.  For players that are still working on their strength and vertical leap, you can still make a major impact for your team if you box out properly.  Rebounding is half about getting the rebound, and the other half is about not LETTING YOUR OPPONENT GET THE REBOUND!!!  Coaches reward players limiting their opponents on the boards.

Players who box out, get rebounds! Players that rebound in tryouts, make teams!

Players that want to impress coaches and win games, need to master the box out technique! Boxing out properly in team tryouts will get players rebounds and coach’s praises!!!
Focus on rebounding by doing the following things to improve your technique:
  • Deny your opponent the ability to rebound the ball before you go up for the rebound.
  • Make sure to use the proper box out technique show in the video when you ball!
  • Make it your top focus to get every rebound, rebounding is 90% effort!
Secret #5

Become a Defensive Stopper

Pro Tip: At the middle and high school level most players do NOT like to dribble with their weak hands!  As a defender you need to use this to your advantage and player defense on the strong side and force players to their weak sides.  Even players that are good ball handlers don’t love to go to their weak hand, and even the best players have their weaknesses.  Learning to play defense by exposing opponent weakness will shut down and frustrate offensive players.

If you can't play defensive, then coaches do NOT want you on their teams!

Every player can score, but not every player can stop other players from scoring! Coaches need defensive stops to win games, so focus on defensive to impress coaches in tryouts!!!
Take a defensive focus in tryouts, spend your energy doing these things:
  • Never let other players go past you OR score on you!
  • Force players to their weak hand, watch video for more!
  • Help your teams on defense and draw a charge!!!
Secret #6

Holding Shot Follow Through

Pro Tip: Shooting consistency is the a major factor in how often you make your shots.  Shots missed can be either missed right, left, long, or short or any combination of these.  When you shoot with a half, or not fully finished shooting follow through you most often miss your shots both long and short due to the lack of shot consistency.  In order to ensure your shot is on target and not long or short, make sure to FOLLOW THROUGH with FULL arm extension each time you shoot!!!

Quickest way to make more shots is to hold your shooting follow through!

Following through on your shot not only increasing made shot percentage, but also shows coaches the level of shooting fundament skill you have.
Increase your shooting percentage and exposure in tryouts by:
  • Shooting the ball with a higher arch, giving your shot more rim diameter to play with!
  • Make sure to shoot the ball and fully extend your shooting arm when following through!
  • Do NOT pull the string and pull your follow through down until ball hits the floor.
Secret #7

Shooting 3 Pointers Easily

Pro Tip: It’s amazing how many players think that strong arms and/or shooting the ball from the hip is how to increase your shot range!  Nothing could be further from the truth, the power and strength behind your shot come from your LEGS.  LEG STRENGTH and more importantly SHOOTING RYTHEM within your shooting form is where the ability to shoot from LONG RANGE comes from.  In order to show coaches you can shoot the ball from the 3-point line, you need good shooting rhythm in order to get the ball to the basket high and soft.  Improve your shooting rhythm by watching the VIDEO ABOVE!!!

The game has changed! Coaches want players that shoot high percentage 3's!

Coaches want players who can easily get the ball to the basketball from the 3 point line. Players that have good shooting rhythm and can make 3s easily make teams at tryouts!!!
To make 3s easily, makes sure to do the following things before tryouts:
  • Shoot every shot you take with a complete follow through!
  • Work on your shooting rhythm, see Shot Rhythm VIDEO!
  • Fall forward on your 3 point attempts, see Rhythm Video!
Secret #8

Creating Space with the Dibble

Pro Tip: Being able to create space on offense becomes more and more important as you play against better and better teams as you progress in age.  For middle school players, concentrate on simple speed changes and mix in back up dribbles mixed with a good hard cross over.  For more advanced defenses like at the high school level, using “hesi” hesitation dribbles while also varying  your speed with do the trick.

Get your shots in tryouts, by creating open space with the dribble!

In tryouts you need to get your shots up!  This can be a challenging, showcase your shot by creating dribble space between the defender and taking your shot!!!
Create space by focusing on these 3 dribble moves:
  • Create space between the defender by changing your speed between fast and slow.
  • Using a back up dribble to create space between the defender and yourself.
  • Hesitation dribbles can also create space for you to pull up and take your shot!
Secret #9

Be a Coachable Player

Pro Tip: You may think it’s insane to think that coaches will choose decent players who can be coached, over good players that refused to listen to ways to improve!  But it is the honest truth.  Coaches know they can win more games with players they can teach, while players that don’t listen often times ruin their teams.  So if you want to have a place on a team, make sure you listen to coaches use their suggestions immediately in your game.

Coaches prefer average players they can coach, then a good players who don't listen!

Players that respond to coaches with eye contact and use “yes coach” responses, make teams. During tryouts, respond to coaches in this way and immediate do what coaches tell you to do!!!
Being coachable in tryouts means do the following 3 things:
  • Respond to coaches by saying “yes sir or yes coach”.
  • Learn from coach instruction, do exactly what they ask!
  • Look directly at coaches during instruction, don’t be distracted.
Secret #10

Make Your Free Throws

Pro Tip: Don’t think that shooting free throws is difficult just because you see professional players struggling to make over 80%-90% from the free throw line.  It’s actually very simple to shoot above 85% from the free throw line if your shooting form is locked in and free throw routine is on point.  As a young player looking to make a middle or high school team, proving to coaches that you can make all of your free throws by showcasing a proper shooting form, will pencil you in as a member of the team.

It's the easily shot in the game, coaches love players that make their free throws!

Follow your routine, and use the shooting strategies in this video to show coaches you are dependable from the free throw line.  It will earn you high marks in tryouts!
The recipe for a shooting high percentage free throw is…
  • Use a routine that you go through each time you shoot a free throw.
  • Make sure to line up your shooting foot to the center of the basketball.
  • Follow the shooting form tips in the video to ensure your ball is online to the basket!
Secret #11

Keep a Positive Attitude

Pro Tip: It has become normal for NBA players to act dramatic on the basketball court, complain to referees, and criticism teammates!  Most younger players think that they need to act the same and show poor ATTITUDE!  But middle and high school coaches do NOT want players on their teams with poor attitude.  If you want to make your tryout team, do not let mistakes you make on the court effect your emotions (hang your head or shout).  Also do NOT complain to referees EVER, coach will not select players who complain to referees, coaches, or teammates!!!

Coaches pick players in tryouts that stay positive and encourage other players!

Basketball players that don’t complain to refs, blame or attack teammates, and keep their heads up when they make mistakes on the court earn the respect of coaches in tryouts.
In order to show good attitude during tryouts try these things:
  • If you miss a shot or make a mistake, don’t show negative emotion, keep your head up!
  • Encourage your teammates with positive praise, pick up teammates when they fall.
  • After making shots, don’t show off, stay humble!
Secret #12

Use Pump Fakes to Draw Fouls

Pro Tip: Most youth basketball players LOVE to jump up and attempt to block shots!  Even some of the best middle and high school players do this as well in order to show how GOOD they are!!!  This is something SMART players like YOU need to take advantage of.  The most effective time to use this trick is when you get out on a fast break and are coming in for a lay-up.  As you approach the basket, jump stop and pump fake defenders as they run toward you.  They will jump up to block your shot and fly right by.  You can then either shot and make the shot, or jump into the defender and draw the foul!!!

During tryouts, out-smart athletic players by using pump fakes on lay-ups

Athletic players love to block shots! Use this mistake to your advantage, attack the basket and make a hard jump stop. Then use a pump fake to make defenders jump!
Use a pump fakes in these situations to get clear shots:
  • On fast breaks drill down to the block, jump stop, pump fake, then shoot!
  • Take defender to the basket, draw in big players, pump fake, draw foul!
  • Create space along the 3 point line, step back and pump fake, shoot as defender jumps to defend 3!!!
